|Around 1963 Shinjo began to gather together records and information concerning the first years after the establishment of the Shinnyo-en community. The period from 1935-1941 was recorded and compiled in particular detail and the materials from this time consist of a wide variety of items ranging from photos to receipts. One can readily see here how methodically these materials were compiled.
This entry was made five months after Shinjo and his wife Tomoji enshrined the Achala1 image in December 1935 and started their religious practice. On the 19th of the same month, Shinjo Ito was ordained and became a monk. His words show his determination to master the way.
I must make my body and heart even purer and strive to constantly develop my Buddha-nature. I have to guide those who gather here with a firm and unwavering belief. With this determination set in my soul, the following words came to me:
People do not usually aspire to become saints or sages. Even when they hear of the paths that the holy ones have taken, people think they cannot do the same. But if I were to think that way, it would be even more cowardly than someone who goes to battle and then runs away without fighting.
Out of genuine and honest motivations, carefully read the holy Buddhist scriptures.
Contained in the Achala image, the symbol of our faith, is mysterious and concentrated power stored over hundreds of years from the prayers of various holy people. Merge with the Buddha’s Dharma-body2 and bring that power for the sake of others.
These words poured from my mouth. I offered three bows in deep gratitude to the Buddha and came out of meditation.
